Which shows are better? I think on average 'Murica does it best. The industry isn't so saturated and rushed like it is in Japan so I imagine that's why there are so many high quality, especially in art and animation, and finding a good and quality Japanese anime is like finding a needle in a haystack at least imo |

The Japanese anime may be more saturated but there's plenty quality among the quantity I'd say. The only thing I ever really find to be comparable is the likes of Avatar and animated Marvel/DC movies(mostly DC ones) Unless this counts animated movies from Disney and Pixar etc etc? If we're just talking about cartoons vs anime I'd say anime wins, big-ish production things like Your Name or the average Studio Ghibli movie are phenomenal compared to Justice League movies and such. |

There is some good American animation, but I think Japanese anime is far superior. |

I'm actually not a big fan of anime, so for me it's easily American. There are a bunch of animated American shows I like (Bob's Burgers, Archer, F Is For Family to name a few), but it's rare for me to find an anime that engrosses me in the same way. Then there are the animated Disney films and other cartoons I have fond memories of from my youth. And that's not even counting 3D animation like Steve mentioned. If that's involved, America blows it out of the water. I think it's because Japanese humour just seems to really miss the mark for me and too many animes try to be funny. |

Wait, so we're talking about anime vs cartoons, and not japanese anime vs non-japanese anime, like any of those shows that take clear inspiration from anime, ala Avatar: The Last Airbender? |

There's no such thing as non-Japanese anime, right? Doesn't 'anime' just mean 'animation' in Japanese? |

Pretty much yeah. I'm not talking about 3D animated movies. I'm talking about cartoons. Anything from the new castlevania series to last airbender to young justice. That's mostly what I had in mind

So, what, are we just going to separate them into categories? 'cause japanese cartoons don't have as much variety as other cartoons. They're usually pretty simple or pretty straightforward, and they don't abuse CGI as much as 'murican stuff, where CGI seems to be the norm for everything nowadays. Either that or flash. It's kinda unfair to compare, especially since anime's been taking inspirations from shorts and animated movies from the US for quite a while now, though they haven't been around as long as other animated media from other countries, mainly from the beginning of the Disney Renaissance era, which is late 80s (notice how the big lively eyes was a trope everywhere around that time). It'd be better if we compared similar 'murican and japanese animations rather than compare them in general. For example, let's put Samurai Jack against Afro Samurai, or Boku no Hero Academia with any superhero cartoon (granted Boku no Hero Academia's gonna lose that one ).Because in general we have a pretty clear winner due to more variety in almost every aspect. |

I hate most American cartoons, even the acclaimed ones like Rick & Morty and Bob's Burgers. They just don't appeal to me. I'll watch an episode from time to time when other people are watching and laugh with them, but it's never something I would want to binge alone or get into. The only American cartoon I've ever loved was Avatar. Oh, and I also don't enjoy superheroes, so most of them are out the window for me based on that alone. Definitely Japanese cartoons. It's hard to find any American cartoon that has the same level of depth and maturity without it being a comedy or something Batman. @Darker: Samurai Jack is better, but that's only because Afro Samurai sucks (IMO) Compare it to an actual samurai anime, for chrissake.

If you're looking for a REALLY mature and serious cartoon, watch Gargoyles. |

I think the advantage anime has here is that it has everything. American cartoons only really have kids stuff and then stuff with more adult themes like Family Guy. Barely any actual romance series or slice of life or even horror, to my knowledge anyway. Heck there's even an anime about swimming, many in general about various sports and there are many diamonds among each of these categories. I think the problem with a lot of American cartoons is that they drag on a lot, Family Guy was supposed to end after 150 episodes and it's still going and it shows that it was supposed to end. Has nowhere near the charm or level of comedy it used to. Same with Simpsons, American dad and basically any of the long running ones. I've never watched a short cartoon series as gripping as the likes of Erased. If we're talking stuff like Lion King then America obviously takes kids movies but teen and adult movies are debatable. |

I'm not sure stuff like The Lion King or other old Disney flicks are for kids. They're more for young and old teens than anything else (or to be more accurate, the whole family), even if there's barely any blood. |

Idk, it's not that I don't enjoy those movies now. But I only watched them as a kid. Occasionally I've seen them when older. Yeah, though I think I'd agree that they're more family movies. But most people seem to associate them with children. |

You're crazy if you think Disney films like Lion King etc weren't aimed at kids. Sure, they were family films, but kids under 10 were easily their target audience. Edit: Also, someone mentioned Rick and Morty. I completely forgot to mention that above, I love that show. Edited by Mitas, Jul 19 2017, 08:31 PM.

America does comedy shows better than anime (on average, at least), there are some really funny anime, but Archer, Rick and Morty, sometimes even Family Guy never fail to make me laugh. Anime does everything else better imo. Edited by Daniel, Jul 19 2017, 08:38 PM.
